History of the GED

  • 1942- Developed by the United States Armed Forces Institute for returning World War II veterans
  • 1947- Civilians were first allowed to take the GED
  • 1963- Veteran’s Testing Service changed its name to the GED testing service
  • 2001- GED Testing Service organized through joint venture with American Council on Education and Pearson
  • 2014- GED program updated
